abstract = {The utilization of reclaimed asphalt pavement (RAP) aggregates as an alternative for rigid pavements is limited. The main objective of this study is to explore and improve the utilization of RAP aggregates as an alternative material for rigid pavement. Specifically, this study focuses on addressing a significant challenge associated with RAP aggregates, which is their poor bond with cementitious binders. The poor bonding results in low compressive and tensile strengths of concrete or mortar. The poor bonding is mainly due to the presence of a thin oily layer of asphalt residue. A proposed method was carried out to reduce the negative impact on the bond between the aggregate and mortar by exposing the RAP aggregates to the pyrolysis process. The research focused on the analyses of the physical and chemical behavior of the aggregates, using the SEM, EDX, and FTIR approaches, as well as reviewing the mortar in both compressive and flexural tensile strength. The pyrolysis affected the physical and mechanical properties positively and the chemical composition of the RAP showed significant changes. The chemical constituents of asphalt attached to RAP aggregates are hydrocarbons. The thin layer of RAP asphalt is the cause of weak bonding, but this layer was altered by the pyrolysis procedure. As a result, water absorption decreased, which had a positive impact on the hydraulic synergy of cement. It is shown that the pyrolyzing RAP improves the compressive strength and flexural tensile strength through modification of the asphalt residue covering the aggregates.},

An equation for predicting the tensile deformation energy dissipation has been proposed based on experimental and numerical data. In both scenarios, the recycled aggregates should provide a good bond with the binder to achieve strength. This study focuses on reusing recycled asphalt aggregates (RAA) in mortar. The major weakness of RAA is the thin oily film originating from the asphalt residue, weakening the bond with cement. The pyrolysis method is accessed in an attempt to overcome this weakness. Three scenarios were investigated; the use of virgin aggregates (VA), RAA, and pyrolysis recycled asphalt aggregate (PRAA) as constituent in mortar. All variables were set a constant except for the aggregate type, the VA mortar function as controlling element. This research is methodologically based on experimental data conducted in the laboratory, while aggregate samples were taken from the field. To analyze the influence of pyrolysis to the aggregate-to-cement bond behaviour, qualitative and quantitative data were collected. The quantitative data were the mechanical properties, the mortar tensile, and compression strength. The qualitative data were obtained from scanning electron microscope readings to visually observe the aggregate surface roughness and voids, including the aggregates cross-section and pre-existing micro-cracks in the aggregate-to-cement interface. Supporting data were the aggregates‘ abrasion rate and absorption. The RAA resulted in a significant mortar strength decrease. This conclusion was supported by the findings of pre-existing cracks in the interfacial transition zone. The pyrolysis method improved the compression strength but negligibly affected the tensile behavior. The compression and tensile strength increased as a function of time for both RAA and PRAA, and a strength convergence was reached at 28 days. The PRAA is considered an option for reuse in mortar, supporting nature conservation.},

Additionally, two series of geometrically similar RC T-beams consisting of two strengthened specimens having CFRP rods embedded to various depths as well as an un-strengthened specimen were experimentally tested. The results show that the presence of strengthening materials in the hogging zone influences the flexural failure of the RC T-beams, which experience non-reversed low cyclic loading. In particular, the hysteretic behavior, stiffness deterioration, ductility, and failure modes, as well as the beams’ energy dissipation capacity resulting from the embedment depth of the CFRP rods, were evaluated specifically and in-depth.

The energy dissipation, load‒deformation behavior, failure mode, residual deformation, and plastic hinge formation under a loading‒unloading scheme were studied based on experimental full-scale specimens. The responses of the loading‒unloading protocol were compared to the monotonic loading results. A geopolymer and conventional concrete haunch having similar compressive strengths were analyzed. It was shown that the geopolymer haunch performed excellently and that a concrete haunch remarkably improves the performance of a structure regardless of the haunch material. The geopolymer haunch enhanced the load level at first cracking for 10%, and the formation of plastic hinges 0.7% and 4.5% for the monotonic and loading–unloading, respectively, but slightly reduced the ultimate load by 1%. The loading‒unloading protocol had a negative impact of 3% to 7% on the overall performance, the reduction was lower for the geopolymer haunch underlining the superiority of this material. The loading–unloading scheme resulted in a monotonic strength degradation and deviation in failure mode. A finite element model was constructed to generate and analyze the relation of the haunch’s concrete strength to the load‒deformation response. It was found that the haunch’s compressive strength had no influence on the behavior of the beam-to-column joint, even for a haunch with a compressive strength as low as 25 MPa. },
